Aluminium Slat Privacy Screen Balcony – Balustrade Alternative

We recently completed this aluminium slat privacy screen installation for a Perth home, replacing the need for a standard balcony balustrade with a more functional solution.

The balcony was exposed to neighbouring properties and direct sun, so the focus was on improving privacy while also reducing glare and heat coming into the home.

The balcony was exposed to neighbouring properties and direct sun, so the focus was on improving privacy while also reducing glare and heat coming into the home. You can see in the before photos below just how exposed the balcony and front entrance were before.

Balcony Privacy Screen Installation

We installed a custom aluminium slat screen across the balcony, using a combination of heights to suit how the space is used.

A full-height section was installed where privacy and sun exposure were the main issues. This blocks direct sightlines from neighbouring properties and helps reduce the amount of harsh sunlight hitting the window.

Alongside that, we stepped the screen down to a lower height to keep the space open. This allows light and airflow through without leaving the balcony fully exposed.

Reducing Glare and Heat

One of the main benefits of this privacy screen setup is how much it improves comfort inside the home.

By filtering the sun before it reaches the glass, the aluminium slats help:

  • Reduce glare inside the living area

  • Cut down heat coming through the window

  • Make the balcony more usable during the day

This is something a typical balustrade doesn’t address.

A Practical Alternative to a Standard Balustrade

Instead of installing a basic balustrade that only acts as a barrier, this setup works on multiple levels.

It provides:

  • Balcony safety and separation

  • Increased privacy from neighbours

  • Sun and glare reduction

  • A more solid, enclosed feel without blocking airflow

Because it’s custom built, the height and layout can be adjusted to suit each section of the balcony rather than keeping everything uniform.

Built for Perth Conditions

All materials were selected with Perth conditions in mind, particularly sun exposure and long-term durability.

  • Aluminium slat construction

  • Powder-coated finish

  • Fixed, fully framed install

  • Won’t warp, rot, or deteriorate like timber

This makes it a reliable option for homes across Perth, including coastal areas.

The Result

The balcony is now far more usable. It has proper privacy, less direct sun coming through, and still keeps a sense of openness where it’s needed.

It’s a straightforward example of how aluminium slat privacy screens can be used as a better alternative to a standard balcony balustrade when privacy and sun control are part of the brief.

Considering a Balcony Privacy Screen in Perth?

If you’re looking at options for a balcony balustrade or privacy screen, aluminium slats give you more flexibility to control privacy, light, and airflow-rather than settling for a one-size-fits-all solution.
